Whether you are playing in a tournament, at a bar or just with some friends at home, laying a little money on a pool shot always makes the game more exciting. Here are some tips on how to shoot a ball off the pool cushion and send it screaming toward the pocket.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool table
  • Pool stick
  • Cue ball
  • Any pool ball
  1. Step 1

Set or recognize the shot. If you are in the middle of a game, you will recognize when this opportunity presents itself. If not, you can orchestrate it. Place the cue ball near you so it is slightly off the rail. A distance that is comfortable for you to strike the ball. Place the ball you are going to hit in front of the pocket you wish to knock the ball in. Obviously don't place the ball you are going to strike too close to the pocket, because then the trick will not be that impressive.

  2. Step 2

Align your shot. This is where your imagination comes into play. First, imagine a straight line between the ball that is front of the pocket and the pocket. Now imagine where your cue ball would have to strike that ball in order to make that happen.

  3. Step 3

Determine where on the cushion your cue ball would have to hit in order to bounce off it and strike the pool ball in the position you just imagined.

  4. Step 4

Take your shot--this is where the money is made or lost. Strike the cue ball so that it bounces off the rail, smacks into the pool ball and sends it screaming into the pocket. Remember to strike the cue ball with a decent amount of force as when it hits the cushion it will naturally lose some momentum due to the laws of physics. Then smile as you collect the easy pot from your friends.

Tips & Warnings
  • To aid in this trick of bouncing the cue ball off the cushion, use a piece of chalk and draw the trajectory you think that the ball should travel. Then simply follow the lines. Adjust them until you've perfected the trick. Just don't pull out a piece of chalk in the middle of a real game.
