How to Do a Tail Whip Bunny Hop Jump on a Scooter

Borrowed from the BMX trick-book, the tailwhip is one of the fundamental tricks of scooter freestyling. It's a simple move, but it takes some practice to master the timing of the kick and the catch. Once you've got the basic movements down, you can try the tailwhip off of a small jump like a bunny-hop ramp.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ride slowly on your scooter. Moderate speed helps you get air off of the jump, but avoid heading into the bunny hop ramp at breakneck speeds.

  2. Step 2

Put your left foot forward and position your right foot so it's to the right of the rear brake.

  3. Step 3

Bunny hop as high into the air as you can off of the jump.

  4. Step 4

Shove out the deck by kicking your rear foot backwards. Some riders like to kick their foot forwards, so choose whichever feels the most comfortable to you.

  5. Step 5

Watch the deck as it spins around the handlebars.

  6. Step 6

Catch the deck with the bottom of your right foot. This is probably the most critical portion of the trick; not stopping the deck's rotation can leave you on the ground with a nasty bruise on your shin.

  7. Step 7

Keep both feet on the deck and stomp the landing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Adjust your tailwhip's speed so it's appropriate for how much air you get off of the ramp. You'll need to spin the deck faster off of small ramps than off of larger ones.
  • Don't try this trick on your scooter without wearing a helmet and proper safety gear.
