Chinese knots are decorative as well as useful. It's an art form that has been practiced for thousands of years. Because they are beautiful and symmetrical, they are also considered to be good luck. The Chinese good luck knot is relatively easy to tie with these few steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Decorative cord
  1. Step 1

Begin with a long length of cord, preferably something easy to work with and beautiful in color and texture as well. Double the cord and lay it on a table with the free ends pointing toward you.

  2. Step 2

Create three loops in a cross shape, with the first loop being the doubled cord end and the other two sticking out on the right and left sides. Make the loops (called bights) the same size as much as you can.

  3. Step 3

Fold the ends of the cords upward and over the left bight. Fold the left bight over the cord ends and over the top bight so it rests in the space between the top and right bights.

  4. Step 4

Pull the top bight down over the left bight and the right bight.

  5. Step 5

Fold the right bight over the top bight, tuck them under the loops made by the cord ends that were folded up in Step 3, then pull it up to rest over the top of the last loop of cord.

  6. Step 6

Use your fingers to pull on each of the three bights and the cord ends to tighten the knot. (The cord ends will be on the top.) You will not tighten the knot completely, but just enough to be able to fold over the bights again.

  7. Step 7

Pull the left bight over the bottom bight so it rests in the space between the bottom and right bight. Fold the bottom bight over the left and right bights.

  8. Step 8

Pull the right bight over the cord ends so it rests to the left of the cord ends. Bring the cord ends down, passing over the right bight and tucking them under the loop made in Step 7 when you pulled the left bight over.

  9. Step 9

Use your fingers to pull on each of the three bights and the cord to further tighten the knot. Take care not to let the loops turn over as you tighten the knot.

  10. Step 10

Work on the knot, patiently tightening each of the loops, smoothing and adjusting the knot until it is finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your fingers to hold the knot down so the loops you form don't turn over and create an unattractive knot.
