How to Qualify for the Amgen Tour of California

The Amgen Tour of California is an international professional cycling race. Teams begin the race in San Francisco and finish in Los Angeles. It is an eight day, 650 mile race. Years of training and experience are necessary before a cyclist can attempt to qualify for the Amgen Tour of California.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Compete in local and regional youth events. Enter competitions for practice and experience, and use each event as an opportunity to learn more about competing successfully.

  2. Step 2

    Perform well so a small professional team notices and hires you. Becoming part of a team is necessary to participate in professional cycling competition.

  3. Step 3

    Train to ride over every possible type of terrain. Commit yourself to training 2 to 6 hours daily riding the bike, and include lifting weights a few days per week.

  4. Step 4

    Ride 20,000 to 25,000 miles training and cycling in competitions yearly to prepare to qualify for the Amgen Tour of California.

  5. Step 5

    Dedicate yourself to your sport. It takes a 24-hour per day commitment to become a cyclist that stands above the rest and becomes noticed by the top teams in the international cycle racing profession.

  6. Step 6

    Hire on with a top racing team. Your team must excel in rankings with the International Cycling Union that governs biking to participate in major races around the world.

  7. Step 7

    Receive an invitation as a team to the top races around the world. You must be one of the best riders on your team, because only nine cyclists will qualify to race in the Amgen Tour of California.
