How to Increase Punching Power

It is a common belief that size dictates how powerful of a punch a person can land. This is only partially true. Training and technique can greatly determine your punching power. In order to increase your ability and improve power, it will be necessary to work on your skills. Focus and dedication can pay off in a big way when you are trying to pack a strong punch!

    Things You'll Need

    • Punching bag 100 pounds or more
    • Training coach or friend
    • Weighted gloves
    • Weighted jump rope
    1. You'll Need a Punching Bag

      • 1

        Start by punching a heavier bag than you are used to. A bag at least 100 pounds or more will force you to increase your force. Continue on this bag until you are able to move it with a punch, then move up to a bigger size and start again.

        Practicing with a coach, trainer, or friend will offer you the ability to recognize problems with your technique that you are not aware of.

        Increase punching power by using weighted gloves. These gloves are not to be used along with the bag, but instead are resistance tools to increase strength in the arms. As your power increases, you can increase the weight of the gloves.

        Use the jump rope! A weighted jump rope, will increase strength and condition the arms. Jumping rope, with a weighted rope, along with the above exercises will help increase your punching power.

    Tips & Warnings

    • When punching the bag, you want to avoid swinging. Instead, the bag should bend. If the bag swings, it is not heavy enough. A bend in the bag will allow you to recognize a more powerful punch.
