Things You'll Need:
- Comfortable clothing & shoes
- Reusable shopping bag
- Water & snacks
- A little bit of the green stuff
- An attitude receptive to looking for new ways to recycle used goods or as they're called today -- "vintage".
-
Step 1
I know people like to shop, especially women, but this is similar to that, but with a twist: limiting how much money you spend (Great for this economy or any.) Don't get me wrong I like to shop for vintage stuff and new things from time to time. However, this way of shopping allows me to splurge a little bit 'serendipitously'. This is different from my regular shopping, but it has given me a new appreciation for when I get groceries or other necessities. Plus, it's a fun way to do discount shopping, too.
-
Step 2
I had an epiphany about this type of shopping only a few months ago. I don't do it that often -- a few times a year. My money is tight, so I may have a few things in mind, but I prefer to just peruse the isles and wait for something to call my name. Although, it could be a problem if too many things are yelling "pick me". This is why I bring a limited amount of funds. It forces me to be more selective.
-
Step 3
You can take a friend(s), family or go it alone. However, it can be a much better experience if you go it alone, but if you do take someone with you -- go separate ways and talk about it later. Because you don't want to miss the "flow" part of this. Yes, this can definitely have you "flowing" if you do it with the right attitude. (I've been doing this for years and it has evolved into this kind of ritual for me.)
-
Step 4
I'm not fighting over anything or running around from store to store (which uses up too much energy for me and my vehicle.) I'm just taking my time, because this is not everyday kind of a thing. Do you have a favorite thrift shop, flea market or even a weekend garage/estate sale will do? It's good to set a limit on how much you'll spend, say, $20.00 or less, if you're on an extreme budget like me. The idea is to be kind to your wallet -- while having a little fun droppin' this limited amount of cash. (Even if money is no option -- this can be a fun way to shop. Really!!! Because if you come away with a gem(s), or not -- it's not breakin' the bank.)
-
Step 5
Many of these places have no dressing rooms, so if you're buying clothes take time to examine them well. Also I don't like using the shopping carts that they offer, only if I'm buying a large or heavy object. They kind of get in the way. This is where the shopping bag comes in handy or just carry things on your arm, shoulder or hands, is what I normally do. It's easier to maneuver around that way.
-
Step 6
I don't like to have to hunt down anything -- new or used! That's where the idea for the name came from. Finding something this way makes that purchase so very special and much more appreciative, I believe. So here's to your next 'serendipitous shoppin' excursion'. It's something you maybe already have done. If not, I hope you learn to just go with the "f-l-o-w" and "expect the unexpected".

on 7/1/2008 This makes sense - IF you have the time!...
The relaxed, watchfull and "happy" attitude is the key. If you don't have a lot of time to do this... do it when you have the time, then. FUN is a serious business, we don't need the anxiety of haste to spoil it ;)
Great article!...
