New York City is known for its high-rise apartment and office builidings. That means riding in an elevator is a fact of life. Behaving properly in the elevator makes the process much smoother.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • an elevator
  1. Step 1

Wait for the elevator so that when the door opens you will not be in the way of any passengers who are getting out. Many elevators have electronic indicators so that you can tell where they are relative to where you are waiting. Some elevators even give off an auditory signal so that people with visual impairments can tell that they are about to open. Always allow the people to get off the elevator before you get on.

  2. Step 2

Check the mirror that is often located on the back wall of the elevator or mounted at an angle in one of the corners near the ceiling. The mirror will reveal whether anyone with whom you will not be comfortable is hiding in the elevator. Before committing yourself to enter the elevator make a decision about whether you will be safe inside with the other passengers. Step aside to allow others to enter before the automatic door begins to shut if you decide not to get on. Usually if more than one other passenger is in the elevator, you will be fine. Never ride alone in an elevator with someone who makes you feel afraid or suspicious. If the elevator is too crowded, do not try to get on. Wait for the next elevator.

  3. Step 3

Enter the elevator quickly. Step over the small gap between the elevator and the floor of the building itself carefully especially if you are wearing high heels or sandals.

  4. Step 4

Push the button for the floor you want and then move as far to the back of the elevator as you can and turn around to face the door. If the elevator is too crowded for you to easily reach the buttons, say the floor you would like to go to followed by the word, "please", and someone will certainly push the right number for you. If you are standing closest to the buttons, serve the other passengers by pushing whichever numbers they request.

  5. Step 5

Turn your body to one side to allow passengers who are standing behind you to pass and get off of the elevator when the doors open. If you are standing behind other passengers who do not seem aware that you want to get off, say, "excuse me please", and then gently move towards the open doors.

  6. Step 6

Press the "Door Open" button if you are standing near the buttons to make sure that the doors do not begin to close before all of the passengers have entered or left the elevator. When everyone is inside, press the "Door Closed" button to make the door shut.
