It's important to groom adolescent baseball pitchers and aid them as they grow older. The most important thing you can do for a young pitcher, though, is to keep him as healthy as possible. There are steps to take in order to keep an adolescent pitcher from injuring himself. There are also things that you could be doing to make matters worse for the young athlete. Here is how to prevent injuries in adolescent pitchers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the adolescent pitcher stretches for about 15 to 20 minutes before beginning to throw. It's important that every young athlete gets into the habit of stretching. An adolescent pitcher should obviously focus stretching out the throwing arm to prevent any injury to ligaments, tendons or muscles.

  2. Step 2

Have an adolescent pitcher use swimming as a way to exercise his arms. This is a good way to strengthen the muscles and improve arm rotation without putting too much strain on the arm.

  3. Step 3

Be sure that your adolescent pitcher is ready to throw from a mound before he begins pitching. A young pitcher can seriously strain his throwing arm when pitching from the hill if he is not used to doing so yet. Teach proper pitching mechanics before allowing your adolescent pitcher to take the mound.

  4. Step 4

Never teach an adolescent pitcher to throw breaking balls and prevent the pitcher from throwing them whenever you can. While it may impress friends and be very effective against younger hitters, an adolescent pitcher can do serious damage to his arm by throwing breaking pitches at a young age. Instead, have your adolescent pitcher focus on spotting fastballs. This may bore an adolescent pitcher but this will pay off when the pitcher is older.

  5. Step 5

Once again, have the adolescent pitcher stretch out once he is done throwing. This will have the same effect as stretching before taking the mound.

  6. Step 6

Get the adolescent pitcher a massage on his throwing arm after he has pitched. Just like with an older pitcher, this will keep the muscles loose and help to alleviate current injuries in the throwing arm as well as prevent any future problems.
