One method to thwart an outside punch is with a tan-sau block. The tan-sau block is a high block from the Wing Chun system which redirects an attacker's punch, forcing it to slide off the arm. Here is how to do the tan-sau block.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand in a goat stance with both fists in the chamber.

  2. Step 2

Place both hands in the wu-sau position.

  3. Step 3

Begin with your left hand by turning your left palm inward and facing you.

  4. Step 4

Keep your palm open with your thumb tucked in.

  5. Step 5

Angle your forearm slightly outward to the left.

  6. Step 6

Keep your right hand in wu-sau position.

Tips & Warnings
  • To obtain the correct distance of the block from your body, place your fist under your arm and above your elbow as a measurement.
