How to Germinate Cucumber Seeds Overnight

Don't risk planting cucumber seeds in the soil and hoping for good germination. Poor weather conditions, especially cool, wet soil, can quickly turn your seeds to mush and you will end up replanting the seeds to get a good crop. Germinating the cucumber seeds inside before planting them gives you a nice head start on the season. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the cucumber seeds in room temperature water for five hours.

    • 2

Dampen a clean cloth or section of paper towel. Wring out any excess water. It should be moist but not wet.

    • 3

Position a single layer of cucumber seeds on the cloth. Roll up the cloth with the cucumber seeds inside.

    • 4

Wrap the rolled up cloth with household plastic wrap and secure the edges with a small piece of tape to hold it closed.

    • 5

Place the roll in a warm area. The top of a water heater or refrigerator provides a constant source of gentle heat throughout the day and night.

    • 6

Check the seeds late the next day for germination by gently unrolling the cloth. You will often see roots beginning to form by then, but it should not take more than three days for the cucumber seeds to germinate.

    • 7

Plant the germinated cucumber seeds in the soil in your garden and cover. Be careful not to injure the roots.

    • 8

Keep the soil evenly moist until leaves emerge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to keep the cloth moist and warm for quick germination.

  • If the small roots cling to the cloth, simply remove them gently.

  • Your cucumber seeds need moisture and warmth to germinate, but they do not want to sit in a soggy cloth that overheats. Beware of placing them in a location with extreme high temperatures or trying to germinate them with a soggy cloth.
