Buy a Window Shade
Purchase a window shade to fit your window. Measure both the length and width of your window and take those measurements to the hardware or home décor store when you go to purchase your window shades. Get the best quality shade you can afford in white.
Roll out your window shade on a long table or on the floor. You may want to use an old door and saw horses to create an extra long table for your window shade.
Decide on a design for your painted roller shade. An easy design to start with is a sky design. A favorite sky design shade is one that goes from day to night
Paint the background of the shade. Start painting at the top of the shade with a midnight blue color. As you progress down the shade, begin adding white. By the time you get to the bottom of the shade, you should have very little blue on the brush which should result in a light blue color. Allow the background to dry before you continue.
Add your main design elements including a yellow sun at the bottom of the shade in a corner. Do this just by painting a bright yellow circle. Add a crescent shaped moon at the top of the shade that you can paint freehand or use a stencil.
Add your finishing touches. Use a sea sponge to create clouds at the bottom of the shade on the light blue background. You will want to partially cover the sun. Use white to make the clouds, and then dab a bit of gray paint on the bottom half of the clouds to add dimension. Stencil or stamp in stars to complete the top of the shade.
Hang your shade. Add your decorative shade pull at the bottom of your shade and hang it with the hardware that comes with the shade. If you use this design, you will find that when it is in the up position during the day, you will see the day sky. At night when the shade is down, you will see the night sky. Of course you don’t have to use this design. Just look at a mural and stencil ideas until you find a pattern you like for your painted roller shade.
