Gas prices are rising, and so is everything else! With a few small changes, you can be on your way to saving money with these budget friendly shopping tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Calculator, Newspaper, Pen & Paper
Step1
The first and most obvious thing to do to save money on grocery shopping is to clip coupons. Almost all Sunday newspapers have a coupon pullout that can have $50 dollars or more worth of coupons.
Step2
Shop around! Don't throw those weekly grocery store ads away just yet. Look through them for good deals, and try to buy things in larger quantities when they're on sale so you'll have enough to last you until the next time they're on sale. A lot of grocery stores now have those "discount cards" you can sign up fo special savings with them also. After looking through the ads on a weekly basis, you'll start to get a feel for whats a good deal, and whats not over time.
Step3
Buy generics! Most grocery store chains have their own brand or "generic" of many items you normally purchase. More times than not, these off brands are made by the same companies that make the name brand, and therefor offer the same quality at a fraction of the cost.
**Also..in many areas of the US, there is now discount grocery stores, that sell ALL Generics, such as Aldi's. These stores are not trashy, and you should not be embaressed to shop there. We have an Aldi's locally here in OH, and I shop there twice a month, saving half of what I would have paid at the "normal" store on all sorts of things from pasta to yogurts.
Step4
Next, safe on the meat! Try shopping at you local butchers instead of the grocery store for meat. Many of them sell "meat packs" with a huge variety of various cuts of chicken, beef, pork, etc in large freezer packs.
Another money saver with meat is to buy from farmers! Many farmers sell whole and half a beef, pigs, etc..This is much much cheaper also, if you can afford to pay a larger lump sum up front. We buy our beef from a local farmer, and get plenty of roasts, steaks, burger etc. much cheaper than I'd spend all year at the store. You can also find all natural "grass fed" cattle also! Which, is what we get, and it's not highly priced like the organic meats at the store. Try looking at Craigslist under farm & garden for local farmers selling meat in your area.
The last meat buying tip is that sometimes at the grocery stoe, they reduce the price of meat by 50% or more the last day of sale before expiration. This meat is not bad or rotten, it just needs to be frozen or cooked THAT day..So buy it up, take it home and freeze, and save more money!
Step5
Savings on Fresh Produce too! Many of the off brand stores sell produce, but another place to look is at local flea markets. Many farmers take their crops to these markets and offer you prices that are much less than retail. Many towns/counties also have weekly farmers markets, where farmers bring their good to sell, a little hint is to show up during the LAST hour of the market, and many farmers lower their prices even lower because they do not want to take it all back with them.
When buying fresh produce if you find really fantastic deals, buy bulk! you can always blanch and freeze most things. For instance, if sweet corn is super cheap, buy many dozen, blanch and cut ears in half and freeze them, or you can even cut the corn off the cob and freeze.
Step6
In some areas, there is bread stores, that are owned by the bread baking company, such as schwebels or nickels, and you can buy bread very very cheap compared to the grocery store. I buy my bread this way, then wrap it in a brown paper bag, tape shut and freeze. I have never had a problem with it going bad, and it tastes just as fresh when thawed.

Tips & Warnings

  • After awhile, all of the above becomes routine. Just pick and choose what works for you and your lifestyle, but even using only one of my tips is sure to save you a little cash!
