How to Save Money on Gasoline How to Save Money on Gasoline

With rising gas prices reaching an all time high, it has become increasingly necessary for regular folks to find alternative ways to save at the pump. This article will provide you with some handy tips on how to stretch every gallon of gas.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Fist of all, to save money on gas, consider walking or biking to work and the grocery store, whenever possible. Besides saving you money, it will provide many health benefits. Car pooling is also another great way to conserve gas and lessen pollution.
Step2
Get an efficient air filter for your vehicle. This will help you get better fuel mileage. Also, keep the correct amount of air in your tires. Most gas stations have tire gauge you can use for free. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the correct air pressure.
Step3
One of the most effective ways to stretch your gas mileage is by changing the WAY you drive. Moderate drivers, as compared to aggressive drivers, can increase their gas longevity by 37%. First off, don’t hammer the gas pedal when you start up. Also, break easy. In order to see immediate savings, lower your acceleration from 0 to 60 in ten seconds to 0 to 60 in fifteen seconds. You should notice a huge difference in how far your gas takes you.
Step4
Another tip that you might be aware of but likely do not enact is to drive at a lower speed. Even when you are on the freeway and cars around you are flying at 10 to 15 miles over the limit, keep you vehicle at a legal pace. This can save you a bundle and will likely only cause you to reach your destination a minute or two later.
Step5
Here is another well known tip that produces huge savings. Set your cruise control. Doing this will allow your vehicle to even out the acceleration and prevent surging on the gas pedal.
Step6
Here is one tip that actually doesn’t work. Having the air conditioner on does not actually waste enough gas to justify roasting to death. If you roll the windows down instead, the drag on your car will actually cancel out any savings from not running the A.C.
Step7
Finally, avoid idling excessively. If you are going to be in one spot for more than a few minutes, turn the car off.
Step8
Granted, these suggestions include some significant changes in the way you drive, but the benefits to your wallet greatly compensate you for any inconvenience. For added piece of mind, consider the benefit to your health, safety, and the environment.

on 7/17/2008 If you have a vehicle with a mechanical engine fan such as a SUV, truck or older car, swap it out with an electric fan. There are kits available for most vehicles (they run anywhere from $80 for a car to $250 for a truck), they're easy to install and they not only save gas but they also improve performance. I read an article a couple years ago (think it was in Car Craft) where they put a stock 350 V-8 on a dyno and they found that it takes 15 HP just to spin the mechanical fan at idle and low RPM acceleration. By replacing the fan with an electric one you not only regain that 15 HP, you also increase your MPG by 3-5. This will not help a lot with highway driving because at higher speeds there is enough air being pushed through the radiator that the fan doesn't usually operate unless you're towing something, but it will really help with the in-town driving and low RPM acceleration.
