Home-made brownies are such a treat but carmel filled brownies are even better. Here is how to make a rich and praiseworthy dessert that keeps well but doesn't usually get left over.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 cup white flour
  • 1 cup powdered cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 bag caramel candy- the little wrapped square kind
  • 9 x 13 inch pan
  • large mixing bowl
  • small mixing bowl
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • electric beater
  1. Step 1

Prepare what you need to make the caramel filled brownies by doing the following. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Soften the butter. Unwrap the caramels and put them in a bowl for later. Grease the 9 x 13 inch pan using the butter wrappers or some of the shortening. Measure all the ingredients.

  2. Step 2

Combine all of the dried ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, salt, and sugar in the large mixing bowl. Stir to mix these thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Beat the butter and shortening into the dried ingredients. This will form crumbly dough that is a bit like pie crust. Add the eggs, one at a time and beat until it is fully incorporated into the mixture. By the time you have mixed in four of the eggs, the mixture will begin to resemble a batter. After adding all six eggs, drop in the vanilla (if you use real vanilla it tastes best). Beat until the mixture is smooth.

  4. Step 4

Pour half of the brownie batter into the greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Place the unwrapped caramels on top of the batter leaving a one inch space between the candies and the sides of the pan. Pour the rest of the batter on top of the caramels.

  5. Step 5

Bake the caramel filled brownies in the preheated 375 degree oven for about 45 minutes. While a knife inserted into the brownies will NOT come out clean because of the melted caramels, you can tell that the brownies are done if the top begins to crack. When you touch it, it should bounce back and the sides will begin to pull away from the pan. Serve warm or cool.
