Instructions

    • 1

Determine where your oleanders will thrive, based on your climate. If you have long, hard freezing winters, your oleanders will be happiest indoors. You could put them in a greenhouse or use them as house plants. They can tolerate an occasional mild freeze, but they’re not up to nasty cold.

    • 2

Plant your oleanders in full sun, in well-drained soil. They will tolerate shade, but they don’t really like it. The plants won’t grow to their fullest in a shady spot.

    • 3

Prune your oleanders in early spring to remove dead wood and anything that was damaged by cold during the winter. They don’t mind a severe pruning, and they’ll continue to branch if you cut back their stem tips.

    • 4

Remove spent blossoms to encourage further bloom.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plant oleanders with care, wear gloves when handling your plants, and keep your children and pets away!

  • Reconsider planting oleanders if your household includes children, pets or livestock. Oleanders are extremely poisonous.
