Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Telephone Book
- Personal Documents
- References
- Legal Documents
Step1
You will receive a document called a Notice to Appear (NTA). Make a copy of this document and place it in a safe place. Your immigration lawyer will need the original. Locate all your personal documents like birth certificate, passport, driver's license and make copies for this file to give to your lawyer. The more information you give your lawyer the better case he can make for you to stay in the United States. Many people lose their deportation cases due to lack of documents.
Step2
Start calling immigration lawyers in the Yellow Pages. Start with the smallest ads first because these are the least expensive lawyers. Write down their prices and fees. Ask them how much the entire deportation case will cost you. Only visit the immigration lawyers that will meet with you for free to discuss the case. Ask them if you can observe them conducting a deporation hearing for another client FROM YOUR COUNTRY. You are trusting this person with your life. Check them out before giving them money.
Step3
Before your hearing visit the immigration court listed on the Notice to Appear. The deportation hearings are open to the public. Watch the deportation hearings and take notes on the immigration lawyers. Write down questions to ask the lawyer. Write down names of lawyers you saw in the Yellow Pages. Ask the government attorney how long the private attorney comes to court. You are looking for an experienced attorney at a fair price.
Step4
Wait until the immigration lawyers are leaving the courtroom and ask for business cards. You should only take cards from the lawyers who handled their cases well in court. These are the lawyers who handled the cases quickly and the judge was pleased with their work. Ask if they are a member of AILA - American Immigration Lawyers Assocation.
Step5
Finally, based on your budget and what you saw in court select the best immigration lawyer. Many people pick the first lawyer that comes along and then they regret it. Take my good advice and good luck with your deporation case!
