Instructions

    • 1

Decide how large your pompom will be. Think of the diameter of the finished pompom. Then cut out a cardboard square with the same length and width as the diameter of the finished pompom.

    • 2

Wind yarn around the cardboard. Start by wrapping the yarn in neat rows, one next to the other, for the whole width of the cardboard. Leave about 1/4 inch margin on the left side and also on the right side. Make a second layer of wrapped yarn on top of the first layer. Continue wrapping layers of neatly wrapped yarn until the thickness of the wrapped yarn equals the diameter of the pompom that you wish to make. The wrapped yarn on each side of the cardboard will measure half of the diameter of the finished pompom.

    • 3

Insert one piece of yarn (at least 6 inches long) between the top of the cardboard square and the bundle of wrapped yarn. Tie the ends of this piece of yarn into a very tight knot that pulls the bundle together.

    • 4

Slide the bundle of yarn off of the cardboard, holding it by the loose edges of the knotted piece of yarn. You will need to position your thumb at the top of the cardboard over the yarn. As you pull the yarn off of the cardboard positioning your fingers into where the cardboard used to be.

    • 5

Hold the yarn at the tied-off part at the top of the wrapped loops. This knot will end up in the exact center of the pompom near the top. To make this happen, cut the yarn at the bottom of the loop, so that the individual pieces of yarn extend from the knot.

    • 6

Dangle the pompom by the knot. The loose pieces of yarn will flop out and spread away from the knot. Trim the edges so that the pompom is full and round. Use ends of the knotted string to connect the pompom to your hat or craft item.

Tips & Warnings

  • To end up with a multi-colored pompom, start with more than one ball of yarn. Hold one strand from each colored ball of yarn and wrap them simultaneously around the cardboard.
