How to Create a Purse

Creating a purse enables you to incorporate your personal style into a handmade creation, and it doesn't have to involve a sewing machine, lots of money or artistic skill. Read on to learn about how to create a purse.

• Scarf (square shaped)
• Fabric (19 inches X 19 inches)
• Metal or wood handles

How to Create a Purse

1. Find a head scarf you already have in your closet or purchase a new one that has an interesting floral or geometric design. The scarf should be square shaped. If you want to be more creative, purchase a light colored fabric that can be dyed or painted and create your own design like graffiti or tie dye.

2. Purchase metal or wood handles for your purse at a local craft store. Make sure that you will be able to tie your scarf or fabric to the ends of the handles.

3. Place your scarf or fabric on a flat surface. Start with one corner of the scarf or fabric and tie it to the end of one handle. Then tie the second corner on the same side of the fabric or scarf to the other side of the handle. Repeat this tying process with the last two corners of the scarf or fabric.

4. Create a small, mobile purse by tying the corners of the scarf or fabric to the two front belt loops on your jeans. You won't be able to hold much in it, but it's the perfect size for essentials.

Tips & Warnings

• For more artistic people, use a sewing machine to sew the two sides of the square shaped fabric and also sew a longer piece for the strap. Remember to sew the fabric inside out and then turn it right side out so the seam is on the inside of the purse and strap.
• Tie the corners to the handles tightly so your personal belongings won't fall out or add super glue where the knots touch the handle for extra security.
