Step 1
Stay in good shape. Yacht racing is not a strength or physical endurance contest, but it can be physically demanding. Plan on spending at least an hour working out every day.
-
Step 2
Practice self-discipline. Keep a daily log book, become aware of how long various tasks take to complete, and practice regulating every aspect of your life. This is particularly useful in preparing for racing single-handed or with a small crew.
-
Step 3
Train with your crew. All things being equal, the team which works the best as a team will win.
-
Step 4
Get the gear. Nowadays, good electronics is where it's at. A good autopilot system, GPS, wind vane, emergency beacon, and sonar for shallow areas are all necessities for serious offshore sailing.
-
Step 5
Practice safety procedures and prepare for the worst. Learn to get around anchored to safety lines. Practice man overboard procedures and other emergency drills. Being ready for an emergency is worth the time.
-
Step 6
Study previous races. Find out what strategies the winning teams used, what wind and weather patterns occurred, and how much they varied from year to year.
