Don't let your toilet get like this!

From time to time we will experience nasty mold growing in our toilet. Sometimes it can be really hard to kill and get rid of. Even when using standard toilet cleaning solutions, brown mold is a tricky mold and can keep coming back if you do not kill all of it in one fell swoop. These steps will show you how to wage war on that brown mold that is growing in your toilet bowl and allow you to kill it off for good.

How to Kill Brown Mold in a Toilet

  1. Step 1

Get the supplies. Any local grocery store or drugstore will have the cleaning supplies that you will need.

  2. Step 2

Pre-treat the toilet overnight. Brown mold usually collects and grows on the pores of the toilet, making it very difficult to kill. The best method is to pre-treat the mold prior to cleaning your toilet. Pour a half of a gallon of bleach into the toilet bowl and into the above water reservoir and allow it to sit overnight. Do not use the toilet or flush it while you are treating it with bleach. Allow it to sit at least 8-10 hours or more. Make sure that you close the toilet lid and the bathroom door so your animals can not get to it. Also, if you have a bathroom fan, turn it on so the room can ventilate.

  3. Step 3

Scrub the toilet. Don your rubber gloves and apply generous amounts of toilet cleaner and scrub the toilet until you have cleared any remaining mold. The bleach will kill most of it and simple circular scrubbing motions using cleaner will get rid of the rest.

  4. Step 4

Flush the toilet. Flush the toilet several times to clear it out.

  5. Step 5

Treat the toilet again and scrub. Treat again if needed and follow steps two and three.

  6. Step 6

Add a chlorine tablet to the toilet. Add another chlorine tablet to the toilet reservoir to keep the mold from coming back.

Tips & Warnings
  • It may take several applications of bleach and several scrubbing sessions to remove and kill the brown mold.
  • Always wear protective rubber gloves when using industrial grade chemicals.

on 9/20/2008 PLEASE remind everyone to FLUSH the toilet several times after the bleach has sat. Mixing bleach and other toilet bowl cleaners could cause VERY dangerous fumes that will send you to the hospital. NEVER mix Anything but water with bleach!
