If you've been wondering how to convert a color digital photograph to black and white using Photoshop Elements, here's an article to help you do just that.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements software
  • a color digital photograph
  1. Step 1

    Start the Adobe Photoshop Elements software.

  2. Step 2

    From the Welcome menu, choose Edit and Enhance Photos.

  3. Step 3
    Open file
     
    Open file

    From the File menu, choose Open. Locate your photo on the disk, then click on Open to bring up the picture.

  4. Step 4
    Select greyscale
     
    Select greyscale

    From the Image menu, select Mode, then Greyscale. You will be prompted with the question "Discared color information?" Click on OK.

  5. Step 5

    Immediately save this file with a new name so you can still keep the color image. Choose File then Save As, then type in a new file name. I generally keep the same name, but add the letters BW at the end.

Tips & Warnings
  • Black and white photos have a timeless look.
  • Converting a photo to black and white can help even out skin tones.
  • Converting a photo to black and white is helpful if the colors in the photo are too bright or seem to clash.
  • Experiment with converting your photos from color to black and white. Some photos look better in color, and others look better in black and white.
