Throw a Three Finger Changeup
Throw a Three Finger Changeup

Throwing finesse pitches is a challenge for all pitchers. The ones that typically have the hardest time, however, are young pitchers or those with smaller hands. They have no problem throwing the ball hard, but when it comes to fooling a hitter with something different, these pitchers can tend to struggle. The three-finger changeup is the perfect pitch for those hurlers to learn!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baseball
  • Either a catcher to throw to or a net to throw against.
  1. Step 1

Grip the baseball with your middle, index, and ring fingers placed on top of the baseball. The "horseshoe" in the laces should look like a reverse "C" under your three fingers. Grip is demonstrated in the above picture.

  2. Step 2

Your pinky finger and thumb should be resting on the smooth section of leather directly under your three fingers on top.

  3. Step 3

Hold the baseball deep in your hand in order to take the necessary speed off the pitch; this gives the three-finger changeup its deception.

  4. Step 4

Throw the three-finger changeup exactly as you would throw your fastball.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some pitchers recommend that you touch your pinky finger and thumb under the ball. This offers better "feel" which leads to better control.
  • Always make sure and properly warm-up your arm every time you throw.
