How to Decline an Invitation Graciously

You've just received the dreaded invitation. You know you don't want to go, but how to decline without offending the host? Here are suggestions on worming your way out without ending the relationship.

Instructions

    • 1

Let the host know you need to check your calendar. Make sure you leave them with a warm feeling by implying that if you're free, you'll of course be there, wouldn't miss it. You just must check that calendar.

    • 2

Call as soon as you can to decline. This lets the host know that their event is top of your mind and you checked the moment you got home to see the calendar.

    • 3

Make sure to let the host know how sad you are that you have a conflict; they don't need to know that you've got a clear date, only that you would have loved to come, if only you were free.

    • 4

Don't set up other big plans that night, as word will surely get out. It's poor taste to say you're busy and then set up another event after the fact. If you've told the host you're committed that night, plan a quiet night with the family and keep a low profile.

Do inquire about how the event went after the fact. Again, you want the host to have the impression that you would have so loved to come over but for that conflict--but don't be too eager or you'll start the cycle again.
