Besides having a good snowboard, bindings are some of the most essential things you'll purchase to get ready for the slopes. Good bindings can be an investment that will last for years.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Knowledge of your shoe size
  1. Step 1

The first thing to consider when selecting bindings is to determine what you want to do with them. Do you want to go fast? Work on tricks? Ride off jumps? Park bindings are a good option if you're looking for a strong, lightweight binding. Freestyle bindings are good for a little bit of everything including jumps and riding in deep powder.

  2. Step 2

Determine the size of your foot. If you have large feet, adjustments will need to be made to make sure the bindings are tilted to fit. You may even need a wider board. Keep in mind that toe drag is dangerous so a good fit is key.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the bindings offer plenty of support in the heel, toe and ankle. Most new bindings offer a toe strap which pushes the foot back into the binding. If you plan on doing big tricks try a "gas pedal." This is a raised patch on the toe plate. It will allow you to go on to your toe edge with less effort.

  4. Step 4

Finally, consider color. What color is your board and do the bindings look good with it? While this isn't critical for performance, it is key for looking good on the slopes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shop around. There a wide variety of bindings to fit different needs and budgets (see Resources below).
