Do you keep getting pop-ups with different content that appear in the left corner and take up most of your screen? Look carefully on the bottom of the pop-up ad--more than likely Gamevance is the culprit. It will typically state "ads by Gamevance." The advertisers pay this website for their "services." Gamevance is gaming software that a child or game fan in your home downloaded from the Internet looking for some free game fun. What you have now is a mess on your hands, but here are some tips to help you clean this up and get rid of these particular pop ups.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First off, go to "add/remove programs" in your control panel (accessed through Windows Start Menu) and remove "Gamevance" or any references to it. A web browser window will open and will look similar to the photo within this article. These steps alone will not eliminate the pop ups, but Gamevance will be uninstalled

  2. Step 2
    Spybot control panel

Run an antispyware scan or two. This again will not eliminate all of your Gamevance pop ups, but will clean out your computer somewhat. You can do this by installing the software with the links in this article if you do not have these programs already on your computer. If you run Spybot, be sure to immunize your computer. Doing this can keep processes from coming back to haunt your computer (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3
    Eusing Registry Cleaner splash screen

Download free software called "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner." This is typically what your Windows Registry wants and needs after a bad bout with spyware. Spyware such as pop-up ads are difficult to keep at bay, but with those entries cleaned out of Windows, they can no longer return. This cleaning program is easy to use: simply check the boxes after you run it and remove the infections and invalid entries. It only takes a few minutes (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Do a disk defragment on Windows by going to Start, Accessories, System Tools and Disk Defrag. This will help put your files back where they should be and cut down on seek time for your hard drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call a computer professional if the problem persists. Do not try to solve it on your own or make changes to the registry.

on 5/19/2009 STEPS 1-4 above are probably a great idea to keep your computer "clean" from viruses. However, the 2 second FIX is to: 1) Go to the following Gamevance official website:http://www.gamevance.com/deactivate.php2) Click on the link to UNINSTALL the downloaded program. It takes you here: http://www.gamevance.com/gamevance_uninstall.php3) When the pop up appears, click RUN/OK That's it. Voila. It uninstalls the program and that should take care of the annoying pop up ads. Drew Goldsmithanti-pop-ups-4-ever

on 4/29/2009 I personally know that ads do come up. I have yet to try the method orig posted. I did try to get rid of a tool bar and now on start up I get the message " cannot ______ gamevance something or other not found. I am kind of sceptical to try the above. I have also had problems with the programs used to DL this stuff. Spybot, Stopzilla, etc. And all those "ads" are by Google anyhow. Sounds like the post was no more phishing with sites then the gamevance ads were annoying. Will dents method first. : ) Thx for posting however.

on 4/12/2009 The new version will not allow you to delete or remove the software via the control panel. Who ever wrote this ought to have their butt kicked! Why doesn't the government outlaw such methods? The easiest fix is to go to "run", enter "msconfig" and go to the startup list and uncheck the box next to the gamevance.exe item. Then go to your C: drive, go down to "Program Files" and find the Gamevance folder. Rename the folder. The program cannot start itself if it cannot find itself.

on 1/26/2009 I don't know why annoying ads would be an advertiser's aim! We all ignore them out of spite when they are irritating! As always....... good article!
