Foreign Expert is essentially a combination of 2 improv tropes, namely gibberish and the interview scene. What adds a little something extra to this game is the presence of a translator, who is forced to speak both English and gibberish in the quest to serve as mediator between the 2 other parties. The result is a game with 3 distinct roles.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An improv troupe
  • 3 chairs
  1. Step 1

Ask the audience for a topic on which someone might be an expert.

  2. Step 2

Seat your 3 players, from left to right, in this order: interview host, translator, foreign expert.

  3. Step 3

Start the scene by having the interview host introduce the show. The host should name her show and then introduce the foreign expert.

  4. Step 4

Nod if you are the expert to acknowledge your name, but otherwise do not respond to any English spoken by the host.

  5. Step 5

Ask a question of the expert in English, as the host. The translator must then translate the question into gibberish to ask it to the expert in a language he will understand.

  6. Step 6

Respond to the translated gibberish question in gibberish as the foreign expert. The translator must then turn back to the expert and translate this response back into English.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each question, until the topic has been sufficiently explored.

  8. Step 8

Have the host thank the expert for his time, then sign off, ending the show and scene.

Tips & Warnings
  • Feel free to have the translator and expert confer a bit back and forth in gibberish if necessary.
  • Don't just translate randomly from gibberish; pay attention to the motions and emotions of the expert.
