Dogs are such natural swimmers they even have the doggy paddle named in their honor. But just because dogs can swim, doesn’t mean they know how, especially if they’ve never been near water before. You can train your dog to go swimming with a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Toy and treats
  1. Step 1

Get your dog all excited about a toy and then throw it into the body of water. If he swims out to get it, you’re done.

  2. Step 2

If the dog just stands at the edge of the water whining at the toy, go in to get it yourself. Hold it over your head while you’re in the water and call him to come.

  3. Step 3

If your dog still won’t follow you, gently place him in the water.

  4. Step 4

Support him with a hand on each side and gently push him through the water so his legs begin to kick.

  5. Step 5

Let go of his sides as he gains more confidence and move a few feet away, coaxing him to swim towards you.

  6. Step 6

Give him the toy, treats and plenty of praise after his swim so he associates it with pleasure. Then make him do it again and again. Once he's got the hang of it, add a hand gesture and verbal cue, such as pointing at the water and saying "Mermaid."

Tips & Warnings
  • Dogs who swim often in pools may need a conditioner to combat dry skin.
  • Some dogs will just abhor water and act like they are being tortured just going near it. Don’t force a dog to swim.
  • Don’t try to teach a dog to swim during a thunderstorm in a raging ocean or in waters infested with shark fins.
