Step 1
Step one: Measure your dog from the nose to base of tail, height whilst sitting and standing, and width at the shoulders. Then multiply by 1.6. Your dog house should be 160% the size of your dog. Remember that the general purpose for your dog house is to either keep the dog warm and/or dry – so by making it any larger than 1.6x the size of your dog – it will be harder to keep it insulated. However, there should be enough room for the dog to turn around comfortably.

Step 2
Step two:. Get the 8’ 2x4 pieces of wood and separate them into 2x2 stock to be used as the frame. From these you want to cut 4 pieces 12 1/2” long.
-
Step 3
Step three: Nail these onto the short edges of the sites. Leave a 3 1/2'” space at the bottom to allow for an overhanding side pane.
-
Step 4
Step four: Attach frame pieces to the inside roofline on the front and back panels.
-
Step 5
Step five: To put the sides on, you will put the edges of one side aligned with the front and back of the bottom platform.
-
Step 6
Step six: To connect the back of the doghouse you will want to align the back panel with the sites, and then nail it in place to the 2x2 frame. Do the same on the front.
-
Step 7
Step seven: Once you have finished the square frame you will need to attach the roof. Usually a slanted roof works best, and this can be built at a 45 degree angle upwards using the same type of framing you used for the sides, however you will need to saw the 45 degree angles into the wood before nailing it together. Once the frame for the roof it built – set it on the lower side frames, nail it in place and cover the top with plywood or shingles as you see fit.
