Using an IPASS in Illinois can save you time and money when driving the Illinois tollway. You do not have to be a resident to purchase one. This gadget, in some cases, save you nearly half and the hassle of digging for and carrying change. With these simple steps you can purchase today and have it up and running tomorrow.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ipass Transponder
  • Computer
  • Internet
  • Credit Card
  • Car
  • Commercial Vehicle
  1. Step 1

Go to a store in Illinois and purchase your IPASS. You will need to put down a $10 deposit on the unit as well as funding it. The total is about $50 to start. You can purchase more toll payments if needed. Determine what you will need before you buy the unit.

  2. Step 2

Go online and create your account for your IPASS. The link is found within this article. Provide your credit card number, demographic information, license plate(s) on up to three cars. You can also provide an automatic replenishment amount should the account value drop below a certain amount. This will reduce the likelihood of violations.

  3. Step 3

Place the transponder in the correct spot on your windshield between the rear view mirror and passenger seat. If you will not be keeping the transponder within that car, you can hold it up when you enter the Ipass toll lane.

  4. Step 4

After your trip, go online to double-check that your tolls registered and there are no violations (fines) to pay. You can also check your account balance. Use your PIN and password to access your account on the Internet.

  5. Step 5

Sign up for email updates on the Illinois tollway. This will also alert you to closures, construction and detours.

  6. Step 6

You can return the Ipass to a sales outlet when and if you no longer need it to receive a refund for your deposit.

Tips & Warnings
  • The IPASS works for commercial and private vehicles.
  • There are up to four Ipass lanes, keeping left helps you move through quickly and will ensure you are in the correct lane.
  • Failure to keep the Ipass in the car that is on the IL tollway will result in violations.
