Karate is part physical and part mental. Physical endurance requires mental calm and stillness giving the practitioner an edge in strength and focus. Zen is combined with Karate to produce this effect.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start your day off with a few minutes of silence reflecting on your daily schedule. This will create a space for calmness and help to combat any chaotic situations.

  2. Step 2

Inhale and exhale while practicing all forms at a slower pace then normal. Inhale on the setup and exhale on the execution of the strike, kick or stance.

  3. Step 3

Transition from one skill set to another, for instance from forms to sparring, by pausing. Use this moment to empty your mind of the previous doings creating a new open space and allowing for a fresh beginning.

  4. Step 4

Sit in a crossed legged position with palms facing upward on each knee. Take ten full deep breaths, relaxing with each breath. Do this before leaving the dojo and request your classmates to join you. This will set a meditative tone for the entire class.
