How to Take Care of Goats

How to Take Care of Goats thumbnail
Goats make some of the easiest and coolest pets.

Goats are blessed with many beautiful aspects, one being the simplicity of their care. Goats don’t require daily walks, and you don’t have to clean their litter box. The only thing they ask for is attention, food, water and a neat little shelter. If you have all this, combine it with a few simple steps, and you have what it takes to take care of goats.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you have a sturdy fence in a big enough area for your goats. They should be able to run freely, have a secure gate and fencing high enough that they cannot jump it.

    • 2

Give them shelter. A small barn-like structure will work well for one or two goats, a larger structure for more. You can even hook up a shed lined with hay at the bottom and blankets for warmth.

    • 3

Provide plenty of water. A giant water trough is best, hosed down and refilled daily. They will kick over buckets.

    • 4

Feed them quality hay. Check your local feed store for good goat hay. Some of the cheaper varieties have no nutritional value. Supplement the regular diet with fruit, vegetables and other goodies. Goats will eat most anything, even a jack-o-lantern when you’re done with it.

Keep them active and neat. Regular interaction and play is imperative, as is frequent brushing with a goat brush and having their hooves trimmed when necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • You’re going to fall in love with your goats.

  • In the event of an emergency, like a severe storm, goats can be taken into the garage or laundry room. Just be advised you will have some heavy clean-up to do, and they will try to chew anything that’s left in there.

  • Make sure you have a trailer, or friend with a trailer, in case you need to transport the goats to the vet.

  • Goats will chew on everything and anything so watch what is hanging around their goat pen.

  • Goats are also highly curious and good at escaping. Make sure your fence is secure and no objects can help them climb out.

  • If a goat does escape, coax him back to you with food rather than try to chase him or you'll just be chasing him all night.
