How to FInd Out What Is In Your Home Drinking Tap Water

In some communities, the city water supply is not what it should be. It can be filled with contaminants, or have unsafe levels of particular chemicals, such as flouride, lead or chlorine. Here's how to find out how safe your tap water is at home.

• the water report in your community
• a computer
• a water quality testing kit

1. You should receive a report on your drinking water quality from your local public water treatment plant every year by July 1st. This report usually comes with your water bill.
2. You also can get a copy from your water company, local library, or the Environmental Agency web site (www.EPA.gov). See the link below.
3. Once you are in the EPF.gov site, click on "water" and then "drinking water". You also can call your water company to inquire if it has found any contaminants, even any that weren't required by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act to be tested for.
4. Do your own water safety test by buying a home testing kit. Make sure to test the water when it first comes out, along with after it has been running for awhile. Send the water samples to a lab to be analyzed, the results can be hard to determine on your own.
5. If your water quality is not to your satisfaction, look into installing a water purification system or get some simple water filters.
