If you have hundreds, or even thousands, of loose Lego pieces that have been separated from their original sets, here is a system for organizing the pieces to make it easier to find them when you need them again.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • loose Lego pieces
  • several clear plastic covered boxes
  • extra-large clear zipclose bags
Step1
Gather all the loose Lego pieces together into one place.
Step2
Legos still as a set If any pieces are still organized by set (still together as a set), place these sets into extra large zipclose plastic bags, or clear plastic containers.
Step3
Store the instructions in the individual bag/box with the pieces, or else collect all the instruction booklets together into one large folder. You might also put them into plastic page protectors and store them in a binder.
Step4
For loose Legos that are no longer organized by set, you will sort the pieces by color. This makes it much easier to find the piece you need when you are searching for it in the future.
Step5
Red and yellow together You will need one box or bag for each color or pair of colors of Legos. When you have a small quantity of one color, it makes sense to combine two colors into one box. Make sure you combine colors that are easy to distinguish from one another. I suggest red with yellow, white with blue, brown with light tan, and orange with dark gray. Black will probably need a box by itself, as will light gray pieces.
Step6
Orange Legos in a baggie If you have few pieces of a color, you might also place one color in a zipclose bag, and set the bag in a box on top of another color.
Step7
Green and minifigure pieces Depending on the quantity of Legos that you have, you can go back and subdivide the colors into multiple boxes organized by size of the piece. Thus, you might have one box for larger black pieces, and one box for smaller black pieces.
Step8
If the boxes you are using are not clear, label each box so you don't need to open them to find the colors you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • From now on, try to keep sets together once they have been purchased
  • When a particular set has been re-assembled, immediately give the set its own bag or box for storage
  • Keep babies and toddlers away from the area where you are sorting. They really do like to put the small pieces in their mouths.
