Step 1
Double-click on the message in the lower right hand corner if it is from Windows Security Alerts. It is red with an "x" through it. This step is optional.
-
Step 2
You may see items that need attention and are marked as such. They're usually highlighted with exclamation points or in red. If it is just a matter of running a scan or turning on a feature, go ahead and do so as prompted.
-
Step 3
If you receive a message warning of expiration or prompting you to renew your security software, you need to make a decision. If you are planning on renewing with the same company, then this will be the most seamless route. You will need a credit card to renew via the Internet. Renewals are generally good for one year, although some more advanced products are good for two years and up to three different computers.

Step 4
Windows Security Alert ExampleIf you do not have a firewall and Windows Security alert is prompting you that the firewall is turned off, go into the start menu, control panel and click on "Windows Firewall" (towards the end of the list) and select the "on" radio button (it is green). Then, exit out of that screen by clicking the red "x".
