Health Care Insurance

Getting health care insurance should be a financial priority for anyone without coverage. The soring prices in health-related costs, from doctor visits and exams to hospital stays and surgery, not to mention medication and maternity costs, mean that self-insurance is out of reach fro all but the wealthiest Americans. Here's how to get your own health care insurance.

From Quick Guide: A Personal Finance Toolbox
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what you're looking for in health care insurance. Are you able to take care of day to day expenses, and simply want something to cover you in an expensive crisis? Or do you want the more expensive but all-encompassing type of plan? Your medical history is important in evaluating your options.

  2. Step 2

Look into employer sponsored plans. If your place of work offers health coverage, find out when open enrollment occurs. This is the time period in which you can join the group policy or make changes to your existing coverage.

  3. Step 3

Find out about high deductible plans, in which you pay small monthly or quarterly premiums and have a high deductible to pay before the insurance kicks in. This type of policy s good for drastic coverage of very expensive medical events (cancer, bad accidents and diseases)but is little good in small needs.

  4. Step 4

Contact an insurance agent to get a variety of medial insurance quotes. You'll need to fill out a application profile with basic personal and medical info. The agent will use this to find policies that might work for you.

  5. Step 5

Purchase health insurance on the open market online if you're comfortable handling the application and evaluation process yourself. You'll receive multiple health insurance quotes and can pick the plan that works best for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Small business health insurance plans and individual policies can be deducted on your taxes if you're self-employed.
