Cycling has becoming a more prominent sport in recent years, especially at college campuses. However, most campuses do not have a collegiate cycling team for interested students to join, and this may be the case at your university. You still can enjoy the benefits of competitive cycling by learning how to start a collegiate cycling team.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a group of friends or interested students together. Finding people to join your team is the first step in starting a collegiate cycling team. You may already know of students interested in the sport, or you can advertise by hanging fliers around campus or creating a group on your school's message board.

  2. Step 2

Establish yourself as a club or student organization. Although you may be trying to establish your group as an athletic team that receives funding from the university, this can take a few years to accomplish. In the meantime, establish the group as a club or organization.

  3. Step 3

Raise money. Money is needed in order to compete in competitive cycling events. Not only is registration for the event required, but you also have to pay for transportation and lodging as well. While you may be granted some money through being a student organization, you will have to hold fund raisers to get the rest.

  4. Step 4

Compete in competitions. Even though you are not an official athletic team, you may have the opportunity to compete as long as your school officially recognizes you as their cycling team. You can compete and hopefully do well enough to convince your school administration to grant you athletic team status.

  5. Step 5

Petition to become a legitimate athletic team with funding, facilities and coaches. After you have established your team and competed in events, talk with the administration at your college or university about becoming an official team within the athletic department. This will generally require some discussion as well as time to get it approved. However, doing so can mean more resources and funding available to your collegiate cycling team.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contact your student government association to determine how to qualify as a club or student organization.
  • Be prepared with actual figures of what it would cost to start and maintain a cycling team under the athletic department since this will be a top concern of administration officials.
