How to keep a ribbon from fraying

Cut ribbon at an angle to help prevent fraying.

All it takes is one loose strand to cause a catastrophic unraveling of ribbon, causing you to start from the beginning of your project. Handling ribbon, whether on a package, on a sewing project or hanging from a decoration, will cause it to fray. However, handling the ribbon should not deter you from using it to decorate packages or accent sewing projects. Simply apply a fray-stopping method to the ribbon once you see the fibers start to unravel. Most methods take minimal time to complete.

Things You'll Need

• Iron
• Scissors
• Candle
• Fabric adhesive
• Clear nail polish
• Fray stop

Instructions

1. Cut the tip of the ribbon at an angle to prevent fraying. The best way to cut the fabric is to create an inverted V shape at the end of both sides of the ribbon. To make the V cut, simply cut inward from the left side and right side of the ribbon, with sharp scissors, at a 45-degree angle.

2. Singe the bottom of the ribbon slightly with heat to prevent or stop fraying. Hold the ribbon over a sink for precautionary measures and light a candle. Hold the candle 5 inches below the ribbon. Move the candle upward, toward the edge of the ribbon until the fibers on the ribbon begin to singe. Once the fibers are singed the ribbon will not fray.

3. Apply a fabric adhesive to the ribbon if a V shape is not an option. To use fabric adhesive, fold the ribbon under, about 1/2 inch, and apply a small amount of fabric adhesive. Hold the ribbon in place until the adhesive dries and release. Repeat with the other ribbon ends.

4. Apply clear nail polish to the end of the ribbon to prevent or stop fraying. Clear nail polish hardens the ribbon, making the fibers stay in place. The nail polish may wear off eventually and need to be reapplied if the ribbon is handled constantly.

5. Apply a fray-stop formula to the ribbon. Available at craft supply stores, the fray stopper works similarly to clear nail polish but with long-lasting results. Simply brush the fray stopper onto the ends of the ribbon and wait for it to dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Always make sure ribbon is the same length on either side when trimming into a V shape.

• Do not tug on a loose ribbon strand because this will cause the ribbon to unravel.
