How to Use 3 Point Lighting in Video Production

Three point lighting is the basic structure of interview style lighting. Each of the specific points performs a task which is an essential part of a production's visual dialog.

Things You'll Need:

  • Lighting kit
  • Camera
  • Talent
  1. Step 1

    Place the key light 45 degrees to the subject’s right or left then 45 degrees above the subject. The key light is the primary lighting source that provides illumination for your subject and it is known as the first point.

  2. Step 2

    Place the fill light on the opposite side of the key light at the height of the camera. The fill light is two levels dimmer than the key light and it is known as the second point.

  3. Step 3

    Place the back light slightly behind and above the subject. This light creates separation between the subject and the background and it is known as the third point.

  4. Step 4

    Create shadows for the subject by placing the fill light at angles between 15 and 30 degrees in direct contrast to the key light.

Tips & Warnings
  • The brighter the lights the more space you need to balance out the lighting.
