How to Paint Over Oil Based Stains

Having an oil based stain on your wall such as grease, crayons etc, can be tough to paint over without it bleeding back through.

Things You'll Need:

  • paint brush
  • oil based primer/sealer
  1. Step 1

    the first step in covering up an oil based stain is to determine what it could be. Normally this is fairly easy. Most people will remember what a stain or mark on the wall came from.

  2. Step 2

    The next step is to put an even coat of an oil based sealer over the stain. This can be applied with a roller or paint brush. Let the oil based primer dry completely. There are several brand that are formulated to dry quickly.

  3. Step 3

    After the first coat dries, you can paint over with just a regular latex paint. Most sealants are white and are easy to paint over.

Tips & Warnings
  • make sure to completely paint over the stain.
