Step 1
Walk all the way around the table before you choose a shot. Take the time to examine all of your options from all angles before finally deciding on one.
-
Step 2
Line up your shot carefully. Check and recheck the shot before you take it.
-
Step 3
Learn the proper place to grip the pool cue. Find the center of balance by balancing the cue on your hand. Then, move your grip back about 4 inches. This will vary from person to person, so be sure it feels comfortable.
-
Step 4
Use proper tension. Don't grip the cue too tightly, or you will jerk the cue, ruining your shot. Don't lose control of it either. You should have just enough tension in your arm to guide the cue straight through the entire shot.
-
Step 5
Check your stroke. Before you take a shot, stroke the cue towards it several times, making sure that you are using the correct motion. Your shot should be straight all the way, not curving to the side, jerking, or arcing up or down.
-
Step 6
Breathe correctly. When you shoot, don't hold your breath. Instead, breathe out as you make the shot.
-
Step 7
Learn from more experienced pool players. Watch pool instructional videos. Go out and play with someone better than you. Good players are usually quite happy to give tips to help out beginners.
-
Step 8
Practice. Play whenever you can, both against other players and by yourself.
