How to Brew Quince Vodka
A gift-wrapped bottle of homemade quince vodka is a very touching and personal gift to give at Christmas or other special occasion. In fact, gifting a bottle of flavored liquor is a tradition that is centuries in the making. Quince vodka is a unique, great-tasting flavored liquor that is not only inexpensive but unique too. Quinces are a seasonal fruit, available from fall through January. They are considered specialty fruit in the U.S. but may be available in the larger grocery stores. Things You'll Need
- *3 large, over-ripe quinces
- *Chef's knife or other firmly bladed knife
- *2 quart jar with a tight lid
- *3 cups vodka
- *2 cups sugar
- *Muslin cloth or coffee filters
- *Sterilized bottle or jar with tight lid
- *Empty liquor bottle

Purchase your ripe quince. Wash the quince fruit, removing any fluff.

Finely chop the ripe quinces with the chef's knife--peel, flesh, core and all. Put the chopped or grated pulp into the jar. You may grate instead of chopping the quince.

Add the sugar and then pour in the vodka. Screw the lid on tightly. Shake the jar vigorously to help the sugar dissolve.

Place the jar in a warm, dark place for at least 60 days. The first two weeks, shake the jar at least every other day. The rest of the time, shake the brewing quince vodka once a week.

Strain the liquor into another jar using muslin cloth. Coffee filters work just ass well. Taste and add sugar if needed.

Pour it into sterilized bottle or jar and cap it tightly. Store until you are ready to drink or gift it to a loved one. Quince vodka is at its very best a year after it is brewed and bottled. If you keep it this long, it will change color from a warm yellow to a deep amber as it ages.

When you are ready to drink or give away your quince vodka, pour it into an empty bottle. Decorate or gift-wrap the bottle. Gift it to a loved one and make his day!

*Quinces are widely grown in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, who also supply North America's specialty market with this fruit.

*Quinces are very similar to in texture to apples but are firmer, drier and more tart. They are also more challenging to chop, and you will therefore need a firmly bladed knife.
