An improperly fitting football helmet can cause more damage than protection to a player’s head. Here are a few tips for a good fit.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Know the head size and shape. The shell size of the helmet can be determined by measuring the head size with helmet tape. Don’t forget to look closely at the shape of the head, as well, for any irregularities that would require a fitting adjustment.

  2. Step 2

Measure the eyebrows. Eyebrows should be 1 to 1 ½ inches below the edge of the helmet. The side holes of the helmet need to be centered over the ears. The back of the skull must be covered while making sure the edge of the helmet doesn’t cut into the back of the neck.

  3. Step 3

Focus on the jaw pads. Jaw pads should follow cheek contour and the face guard is most effective at 2 to 2 ½ finger widths from the tip of the nose. The cup of the chinstrap should fit snugly and square on the chin.

  4. Step 4

Remember the helmet should always move with the head, not independently. If it shifts around it is too big and if it pops up it is most likely too small. Check back over all the features mentioned above and adjust accordingly.
