1. FIll-up during the week, preferably on a tuesday, or a wednesday. These are the days that get the least amount of sales traffic, and therefore they drop the price to entice customers.
2. Fill the tank before or a while after the fuel delivery truck has finished its business of pumping. Pumping while the tanker is delivering stirs up any sediment that may exist inside, and makes it more likely that it will enter you fuel tank, thereby adding things you do not want inside.
3. Use the slow setting on the hand pump. It may take longer, but fuel delivery is based on a specific gravity of the petroleum, and any air bubbles that may be inside detract from the fuel you are receiving, instead charging for air, however minute it may be.
4. Lastly, make certain the vapor recovery system is securely touching the fuel opening. Petroleum evaporates very quickly, and may cause a slight loss to the amount that you receive while filing-up
