Children love to paint with their hands and fingers. This project lets them do that and see their name on their own hand too. Younger children can skip painting and use colors, markers or various colored posterboards instead. Great for teaching name recognition or a class list!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Poster board (white if you want to paint, color or marker it; colored if you just want to skip the paint)
  • Marker to write the names
  • Scissors, laminator machine or clear contact paper, unless you choose the option in Step 4
  • Googly eyes and glue, optional for Step 4

How to Make a Hand Print Caterpillar

  1. Step 1

Trace children's hand with the thumb hidden so only 4 fingers print. Spread paint on the children's 4 fingers only. Press handprint on posterboard.

  2. Step 2

If choosing to make a straight, long caterpillar, add children's names on their hand print. Now cut one medium to large circle for the head and attach to the hand print body. Add two skinny pieces of cardboard coming out from the head. Add two large thumb prints at the ends of the feelers. Add eyes and laminate or cover with clear contact paper. Or you can try it the Step 3 way.

  3. Step 3

If you want to make the caterpillar curl and go up the board, do this instead: halfway through the hand prints of the children, turn the posterboard vertically instead of horizontally and have the children move to the end of the table and print their hand going vertically up the posterboard. If you choose this option, you can change directions as often as necessary to get the desired affect or length. Then add the head and follow directions above.

  4. Step 4

You can add googly eyes if you choose not to laminate, or laminate first without eyes added and glue on top of laminated head for definition or contrast.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use safe tempra paints and washable paint.
  • Googly eyes should not be used with children under 3 years old
  • If using the laminator, adult presence is required
