Choosing the best dirt bike is a big decision, and one that may be difficult to make for first time bike riders. With so many choices on the market, how do you know which dirt bike is best for you? Just ask yourself a few basic questions, and the answers will reveal which dirt bike you should choose. Here is how to choose the best dirt bike for you.

From Quick Guide: Dirt Bikes 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask yourself how much money you can spend on your dirt bike. If you have a limited budget, then you may want to look over used bikes first. Sometimes a diamond in the rough can be found for no other reason than the previous owner needed to move up to a larger size. If you have a fairly significant budget, then you should have no trouble getting a top of the line dirt bike.

  2. Step 2

Ask yourself how much experience you have riding dirt bikes. If you are still learning, stick with a 125 model. If you know a bit about what you are using, then go ahead and move up to the 250 class. Do not step up to the 500 class unless you are a seasoned rider with a lot of experience.

  3. Step 3

Ask yourself how big you are in relation to the bike. Dirt bikes come in a variety of frame sizes, so it is important that you select a size that is comfortable for you to ride. If you are young and will be growing over the next 6 months, then don’t worry too much if the bike seems slightly big, because you’ll grow into it.

  4. Step 4

Ask yourself if you plan to ride your bike on the street. If you do, then you will need to make sure that your dirt bike is street legal. Most dirt bikes are not. You will need to make sure your bike is outfitted with a headlight, tail light and turn signals, along with any other local specifications the law may require.

  5. Step 5

Ask around, especially if you can find someone who has the specific dirt bike you are considering. Ask what they like and don’t like about the bike, and ask if they would choose the same one if they could go back and do it again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choosing the best dirt bike is a big expense and isn’t a decision that should be rushed in to. There is nothing wrong with taking your time and making sure you find just the right dirt bike to meet your needs.

on 8/3/2009 No not at all. He can ride this bike for a couple of years and step up to the 125 or 250 2- stroke or 250/450F four strokes depending on how much he grows and his riding skills level. Make sure he has full protective gear on at all times when he is riding. If this is his first bike and first time riding, there are motorcycle safety foundations and courses that teach the basics and fundamentals of dirtbike riding.
