Are you looking for an affordable way to fill your child’s room with toys? If you are, you may opt for used toys. This is a great way to save money, but, as a parent, you should proceed with caution.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • Soap & Water
Step1
Inspect the Toy

If you are buying the used toy in person, like at a yard sale or a thrift store, pick it up and look it over very carefully. Does everything look in order? Do any parts appear to be missing? If you suspect that parts are missing, it may be best to move on and examine your other options.
Step2
Ask Questions

Whether you are looking to buy used toys from yard sales or from an online auction website, like eBay.com, be sure to ask questions. Ask if all the parts are there. Ask if the toy still works. If you receive an “I don’t know,” answer, you may want to save your money and move on.
Step3
Check for Recalls

Once you get home and before you give your child their “new,” toy, be sure to check for recalls. This is easy to do online.

If you know the name of the toy, you can perform a standard internet search online. You can use a phrase like “*Insert Toy Name Here* RECALL.”

There are a number of recall and consumer reporting websites, like www.recalls.gov, that you can also checkout.
Step4
Clean the Toy

Always make sure that you clean a used toy before giving it to your child, no matter how clean it already looks. You can use disinfecting spray, but be sure to rinse with water and let dry first. Also, a simple soap and water clean can do the trick.

on 6/15/2008 Excellent article. With unsafe toys from china combined with a slagging economy it's very difficult to treat your child while ensuring their safety. Thanks so much!
