Spell-A-Name is a fun trick wherein a chosen card is magically revealed through spelling the name of the spectator with the cards. Here is how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • The name of the person
  1. Step 1

To do this trick you must first know the name of the person for whom you are performing. Additionally, you must glimpse the bottom card of the deck after shuffling and memorize it. For this tutorial we will say the key card is the 8 of Spades.

  2. Step 2

Cut the deck in half and have the spectator, Mary Hartel (just for this article), choose and remember a card.

  3. Step 3

Pick up both halves of the deck and have Mary place her card, face down, on top of the lower half of the deck.

Place the upper half on top--this puts the 8 of Spades directly on top of her chosen card.

  4. Step 4

Carefully cut the deck a few times in order to show how you are mixing everything up. As long as you don't jump directly towards the middle, the key card and her card will forever remain together.

  5. Step 5

Showing all of the cards to your spectator, begin thumbing them, left to right, making sure she knows to be on the lookout for her card. When you find your key card, the 8 of Spades, begin spelling her name to yourself.

  6. Step 6

After the letter "L" from her name, separate the deck and ask if she has seen her card. She will say "yes," at which point you will reassemble the decks. The stipulation here is that, this time, the bottom half now goes on top. The deck halves are reversed.

  7. Step 7

Turn the squared deck face down and give it to Mary. Have her deal one card at a time, face down, for each letter of her name. Once she has dealt 10 cards, have her name her chosen card.

Turn over the very next card to reveal it is hers.
