Worms are nasty little parasites that create all sorts of problems for your dog, from vomiting to serious diseases such as anemia, and sometimes death. They usually live in your puppy’s digestive system, but sometimes they invade major organs such as the heart. The good news is there are a number of ways to get rid of worms. The trick is figuring out when your puppy has worms, and what type of worm it is.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your puppy’s feces or vomit. The most common type of worm, the roundworm, can usually be seen in these. Roundworms are whitish in color and look like a piece of cooked spaghetti.

  2. Step 2

Tapeworms can also be seen in your puppy’s feces. They look like small grains of white rice, and are commonly spread by fleas.

  3. Step 3

Look for changes in your puppy’s stomach. A bloated or what is called a “pot belly” stomach is usually a common sign. At the same time some worms, such as tapeworms, can make your pet’s tummy appear skinny.

  4. Step 4

If your puppy’s gums are light pink or even lighter, it could be a sign of worms. Usually a puppy’s gums range from pink to red in color.

  5. Step 5

In some cases your puppy may act tired with droopy eyes. This could be due to anemic from the worms.

  6. Step 6

You may also notice that your puppy lacks energy or coughs after exercise. This sometimes happens with heartworms, which make it difficult for your pet’s heart to pump.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your pet to the vet if you suspect worms. He can perform the necessary tests needed, as well as provide the right treatment.
  • Never try to treat your pet’s worm problem with an over-the-counter medication. They might not be effective and can have harmful side effects.
