How to Use a Bamboo Veggie Steamer
Bamboo vegetable steamers are designed to be used with a wok, but any deep, wide skillet or pot will work. While a bit harder to clean than their stainless steel counter parts, bamboo steamers allow for faster cooking for a larger variety of foods. Most steamers come with at least two trays, and additional trays can be purchased if desired. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Bamboo vegetable steamer
- Wok or other pot that fits the steamer
- Chopped vegetables

Chop vegetables coarsely into evenly sized pieces. As long as they fit the steam tray, they will work fine.

Add several inches of water to the bottom of the wok or other pot. Set the bamboo steamer in place.

Bring the water in the wok to a boil. Turn down to a fast simmer.

Steam the vegetables until they reach the desired degree of doneness.

Remove the bamboo steamer from the wok and serve the vegetables. The veggies can be served directly from the bamboo trays if desired.

Tips & Warnings
Fish, shrimp and other seafood can be steamed in a bamboo steamer along with the veggies. If desired, rice can be cooked in the wok while the steamer is in place for a full meal.
Wash the bamboo trays carefully. The ties holding the bamboo strips can be fragile.
Bamboo vegetable steamers can often be picked up at flea markets and thrift shops for less than a dollar. Single trays are even less.
Use the bamboo cross ties to separate different vegetables in the tray if desired.
Never touch the hot bamboo steamer with bare hands; always use hot pads or gloves.
