Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scuba diving gear
  • Snorkel gear
  1. Step 1

The first thing to look at when identifying yellow goatfish is the colors associated with the fish. Yellow goatfish have a white body but get their name from the yellow tail and the yellow stripe that runs the length of their body.

  2. Step 2

Size is something you should also use to help identify yellow goatfish. They are relatively small fish ranging in size from only 6 to 12 inches. This is one of the major reasons why you will see schools of yellow goatfish rather than one or two fish on their own.

  3. Step 3

One of the unique characteristics that makes identifying yellow goatfish easy is their whiskers. These whiskers are similar to what you find on catfish, though they are located underneath the mouth and are not as long.

  4. Step 4

Finally it is important to consider what location you are snorkeling or scuba diving in since this can impact whether or not yellow goatfish are around for you to spot and identify. Yellow goatfish tend to be located around coral reefs that are near sand patches. Most can be found located in the tropical waters of the Caribbean or the United States.
